2015: a record year for the Port of Montreal

The Port of Montreal broke two records in 2015: that of the amount of cargo transited there and the number of passengers who set foot on shore in Montreal.
It is during the 177th ceremony of the Gold-Headed Cane that the Port of Montreal announced these preliminary data.
The Cane was given to Captain Eric Jun Aljo Dalipe, a Filipino national and commander of the Vigourous, the first ocean-going vessel to enter the Port of Montreal without a stopover in 2016. The captain was presented with the Cane by Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority, which said: “This trophy is still and always will be seriously coveted by ship masters from around the world who sail to our waters.”
The Vigorous left the Port of Sohar, Oman, on November 30. It crossed the Port of Montreal’s limits on January 1 at 5:21 a.m.
According to preliminary statistics, 31.9 million tons of cargo were handled in 2015, an increase of 4.7% over the previous year. This is a historical record for the Port of Montreal.
Once again, the cruise industry broke a new record for passenger traffic. In 2015, Montreal welcomed more than 91,000 passengers and crew members, which represents nearly a 28% upswing compared to last year.
